How Can You Help?

Seafaring has always been a passion of mankind.  For centuries, the ocean has fueled our sense of adventure and taught us valuable lessons about survival and our connection to the environment.  That premise - learning about ourselves through seafaring pursuits - is what the American Institute Of Marine Studies (AIMS) is all about.  Founded over two decades ago, our mission is to enrich the lives of troubled teens, people with disabilities and others looking for direction in their lives.

Marine Education
S.E.A. Program - Service Learning and Experiential Education for Youth

Service Education and Adventure is an award winning hands-on multi disciplinary program in which students get involved with real environmental stewardship projects.  AIMS assists students, teachers, parents and their communities to create environmental and adventurous learning experiences on the waters of Puget Sound.  During the 6 to 7 week sessions teaching methods include: service learning and team building, outdoor education activities and travel on week long adventures to the San Juan Islands.  Because participants use AIMS vessels as adventure learning platforms, they get to experience the connections between what they are learning in school and how it applies to the real world!  They earn academic credit while helping to create cleaner and more livable communities for both people and nature.

Boating programs that promote marine education and safety

By Leslee Jaquette

Released August 2001 -  Sea Magazine pages 10-13

Imagine an organization that, while teaching third graders boating safety, “locks through” the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks. Some weekends, it takes middle school students on camping and marine life excursions to Blake Island in Puget Sound. On other occasions, high school or college students board the organization’s power and sail vessels for five-day credit courses that involve marine ecology, navigation and water quality monitoring. This organization even provides seven-week marine and service education programs for “at risk” youths that cruise to the San Juan Islands.

Now, imagine that the opportunities offered by this organization are free and provided year-round to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. The American Institute of Marine Studies (AIMS) does just that; it exists to enrich people’s lives through seafaring pursuit.
Founded 25 years ago, AIMS currently operates offices in Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, San Diego and Seattle. When the institute opened in Seattle in 1996, local director Tedi H. Conway introduced the AIMS mission and unique fund-raising method to the Northwest.
